IGNITE 2024

The Broward County Cultural Division and Mad Arts are pleased to announce the return of IGNITE Broward, South Florida’s most exciting, family-friendly festival of interactive art and technology. The third annual IGNITE festival runs from January 24 through 28, 2024, in Fort Lauderdale and Dania Beach, with an array of immersive and interactive light and sound-based experiences created by top national and international artists and designers using the most innovative digital technologies.

Admission is free and open to the public.

Audiovisual Performance by Holly Danger & Tapered Shapes

Experience a night with video artist Holly Danger and electronic musician Tapered Shapes as they come together to create “High Voltage.” Watch the courtyard come alive with Danger’s vibrant visual style that blends analog and digital art and synchronizes seamlessly with the energetic beats of Tapered Shapes. As the sun sets, get ready for a DJ set blending up-tempo electronic favorite tracks by the artists and Tapered Shapes' original music. Together, they will create an atmosphere that is truly "art you can dance to."

Intermedia Performance by Richard Vergez with Ana Mendez & Marcela Loayza

An immersive, hallucinatory experience of reflection and refraction comes to life in this Intermedia, audio/visual installation that uses surveillance cameras, projection, mirrors, and contact microphones. Reliant on the mechanics of the set pieces that make up the installation combined with human interaction, there will be a constantly fluctuating series of improvised permutations that will construct the improvised piece. Audience members are invited to interact with the visuals of the work using their phone’s flashlight, and souvenirs will also be distributed.

Art Talk: Sustainable Video Art and Design by Media Pollution

Video art is not a modern concept anymore. In the modern world, video is EVERYWHERE. Thankfully, there’s an opportunity to create with “old” materials and marry them with modern technology. In this talk, Media Pollution will review the history of video art, the truth and falsehoods of electronics reuse/recycling, and finish with some guidance on how to get into video art and leverage the electronics waste streams for canvases and creative potential.

Drawing on her experience and using examples from her practice, Bech will share light art and interactive art projects that create play in public spaces and talk about why we play and why it is important to keep playing.

Live Performance: SysCalls by Jaime Reyes and re|thread

Our daily software tasks, such as emailing or web browsing, are turned into millions of operations that control the computer. They are called system calls. “SysCalls” is a live audiovisual installation programmed to generate visuals and music, revealing this intangible and extraordinary software activity in real-time. Visuals are generated live and projected on the ground. Music is created in sync with the visuals and broadcasted through multiple speakers in the room. The performance takes 18 minutes, and guests are encouraged to stay during its entirety.
